Targeted Literacy Program
 |
Multilit (Making up lost time in literacy) is a Reading Tutor Program designed specifically for low progress readers. It incorporates the major recommendations for effective reading instruction from the Government’s 2005 report of the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy and was developed by a specialist team of academic researchers and special educators from Macquarie University. It is used though out many schools in Australia and overseas including the Support Unit at Kingswood High School with great success. |
The program focuses on intensive, systematic reading instruction in three main areas:
- ‘phonics’ or word attack skills,
- sight words recognition; and
- supported book reading on a one to one basis.
At Kingswood High School we are committed to improving the literacy standards of all of our students. At regular intervals throughout the year students are assessed to see if they need systematic teaching in the area of reading. Targeted students are then timetabled to receive 2-3 sessions per week, of individual tutoring with a Literacy Aide to improve their reading and comprehension levels using the Multilit Program. On average, students gain one year reading age for every semester they receive the program making it an invaluable component of our Literacy Programs. We are able to offer this program due to being part of the Priority Schools Funding Program (PSFP). That program provides additional funding to targeted schools to help them improve student’s literacy, numeracy and participation outcomes. Kingswood High School is one of 84 high schools that currently receive that funding.
Apart from using the Multilit Program on a one on one basis for targeted students, all classes within the support unit use the principles of Multilit throughout their English lessons, by teaching class texts using the PPP (Pause, Prompt and Praise) strategies from the Multilit Program, as well as developing comprehension and other related literacy activities to compliment class texts. Adopting these methods has seen a significant improvement in the literacy standards of our students. For more information on Mulitlit, go to their website at www.multilit.com.
